Rotorua MTB Trail Map
The Trailmapps Rotorua App is the best way to get a map of the Rotorua trail network. Download the Rotorua Trailmapps App from the Apple App Store or Google Play App store. Cost is NZ$12.99. The major benefit of having the app is that it uses the phone GPS to show you where you are on the screen. Once you have the app on your phone, you don't need data to use it. So download it on wifi and then use it! .
Lets take a tour of some of the other App features:
The magnifying glass shaped Search button takes you to a list of trails, tap on the trail and you get a trail description and elevation profile - handy if you're trying to figure out what trails go down and what go up, or if a trail has a big climb in the middle of it. The Trails have been given a star rating 0-1-2-3, this is a unique feature that means you can avoid low rated rated trails if you wish and tick off the best trails on a visit.
The Star icon on the screen brings up a list of suggested rides that are then highlighted on the map in orange so you can follow them. There are currently 3 family rides - Sulphur Bay Loop, Puarenga Stream Loop and The Dipper Loop. There is an Intermediate Loop and an Advanced Loop. This is great as it shows a rider new to the area how to link all the trails together to make a fun ride - kind of like having a local show you around!
The North Icon brings up a north arrow on the map, and the Ruler icon brings up a map scale.
The "i" icon brings up the map info starting with the "In Case of Emergency". This is a really cool feature - tap the Get Co-ordinates button and your location co-ordinates are shown on screen in both Northing and Easting and in UTM map grid. Tap the Dial 1-1-1 and your phone immediately dials out to the Emergency operator. Normally they ask for an address, but by giving the operator your location, an ambulance can then be directed straight to your location. This feature will work anywhere in NZ
